At our Hawaiian burger chain, we’ve been flipping burgers in Haleiwa since 1975. Fifty years in, people still walk up to the counter and ask the same question: “Which one should I get?” It’s a fair question. Kua Aina burgers are cooked to order, flame grilled over lava rock, and built with fresh toppings. Every option on the menu is worth ordering. The right one just depends on what you like.

Here’s a breakdown of every burger we serve so you can walk in knowing exactly what to get.

What Makes Kua Aina Burgers Different From Other Haleiwa Burgers

A lot of burger spots exist on Oahu. Not many have been doing it the same way for five decades.

At Kua Aina, every burger is cooked to order over a lava rock flame grill. That method gives the patty a char and depth you don’t get from a flat-top griddle. We don’t batch cook. We don’t hold burgers under a heat lamp. You order, we cook, you eat fresh.

The Classic Kua’Aina Burger Lineup: From the Hamburger to the Bacon Burger

If you’re the type who wants a burger done right without anything extra, start here.

The Hamburger is the baseline. A flame-grilled patty, the standard toppings, and nothing in the way. It’s the kind of burger that proves quality ingredients don’t need much help.

The Cheeseburger adds one thing: melted cheese. That’s all it takes to shift the whole flavor. The richness pulls everything together, and it’s been a go-to for regulars since we opened.

The Bacon Burger takes it a step further. Smoky, salty bacon on top of the flame-grilled patty adds texture and weight. It’s the most satisfying of the three foundational builds, and it holds up well if you go with the half-pound patty.

1/3 Pound vs. 1/2 Pound: Which Size Should You Get?

Both sizes use the same quality beef, the same grill, the same toppings. The difference is how hungry you are.

The 1/3-pound patty is a solid lunch. It’s the right call if you’re also ordering our fries and want to finish both without regret. The 1/2-pound patty is for people who came to eat. It’s a full, hearty meal and the better choice if you haven’t eaten since morning or you’ve spent the day at the beach.

First-timers often go for the 1/3 pound. Regulars and big appetites go for the half.

The Pineapple Burger and Avocado Burger: Hawaii Flavors Done Right

Two of our most popular builds reflect exactly where we are: the North Shore of Oahu.

The Pineapple Burger puts a slice of sweet pineapple on the flame-grilled patty. The natural sweetness of the fruit plays against the savory, charred beef in a way that works. It’s not a novelty. It’s a combination that locals and visitors keep coming back for because it actually tastes good. If you’re visiting Hawaii and want a burger that tastes like it came from here, this is the one.

The Avocado Burger takes a different approach. Fresh avocado adds a creamy, cool layer to the hot patty. It softens the char and adds richness without heaviness. It’s one of the more balanced builds on the menu, and it’s the burger we’d put in front of someone who wants something a little more refined.

Both toppings are also available as add-ons to any other burger, which means you can put pineapple on a bacon burger or avocado on a cheeseburger if you want to build your own direction.

The Ortega Burger: The One for Spice and Heat

The Ortega Burger is for people who want a little heat.

Ortega chiles are mild-to-medium green chiles with a roasted, slightly tangy flavor. They don’t overwhelm the burger, but they do change it. The heat is noticeable, the flavor is distinct, and the result is one of the more interesting builds on the menu.

If you’ve had a green chile cheeseburger anywhere in the Southwest, you’ll recognize the concept. The difference here is the Kua Aina execution: lava rock char on the patty, fresh toppings, and the ortega chile as the lead flavor rather than a buried afterthought.

Like the other toppings, ortega chiles are available as an add-on to any burger. If you’re ordering the Pineapple Burger and want a little heat to balance the sweetness, that combination works better than you’d expect.

Which Kua’Aina Burger Should You Order?

Still not sure what to eat at our North Shore burger stop? Here’s a direct answer based on what you’re after.

If it’s your first time, get the Cheeseburger with the 1/3-pound patty and a side of fries. It’s the clearest expression of what we do. No distractions, just a well-made burger.

If you want something that tastes like Hawaii, order the Pineapple Burger. It’s been on the menu for decades because it earns its place there.

If you want something creamy and balanced, go with the Avocado Burger. Add bacon if you want more depth.

If you like heat, the Ortega Burger is your pick. Add cheese and you’ve got a complete build.

If you’re hungry, order the 1/2-pound Bacon Burger and don’t look back.

Every burger on this menu is made with the same quality ingredients, grilled the same way, and finished to order. None of them will disappoint you. The only wrong choice is skipping the fries.
